GMHfH History Part I - Part II - Part III - Part IV

Ruth and Charlie Magill have volunteered with GMHfH since 1988.  Charlie says, “One of the things that really moved us [to be a part of this] was the very first house we worked on.  Ruth asked me, ‘Did you know that the couple we are working with are to be the homeowners?’  She told me she’d been with the wife in the kitchen when she started to cry, saying, never in my life did I expect to own my home.’”

It could be said that the Habitat For Humanity organization was literally built on faith. In 1965, founders Linda and Millard Fuller gave away their substantial wealth in search of a more meaningful life -- and by extension, a happier marriage. Relatively young, the Fuller’s found their decision to begin anew facilitated a chain of experiences that culminated in the formation of Habitat For Humanity.

If one Habitat for Humanity house makes a home, then a site with five Habitat homes makes a neighborhood. That’s what several families have discovered as residents of the newly established Trayah Drive in Milton.

Because it has become a challenge to find affordable individual lots in Chittenden County, Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity decided to create small subdivisions, with four or five houses in each. The first one was successfully established in 2004 on Venus Avenue in Burlington as a purely economical approach to building; but the five families who moved in became friends, making it a true neighborhood.

Every year for the past 14, Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity has conducted a three-day Phonathon. Our major annual fundraiser, the Phonathon brings in an average of $15,000.  Not only is it a critical time to keep our finances apace with need – it is also a lot of fun!!!

From 6 – 9:00 pm Tuesday March 24, Wednesday March 25 and Thursday March 26, volunteers gather at space donated by Hallam Associates at their Farell Street, South Burlington offices. Following a prepared script and armed with a list, each volunteer secures a desk and calls past donors looking for this year’s contribution. Many of our supporters wait for this opportunity to pledge their support to GMHfH. One benefit of giving at this time is that it provides a personal interaction between volunteer and donor; in the follow-up letter, a personal handwritten note reminds donors of the conversation held during the Phonathon.
