Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity recently partnered with University of Vermont students in Public Communication Capstone course to spread our mission with the community.
Students in the Public Communication Capstone course work with community partners on a communication project as part of their Public Communication degree programs. The class consists of juniors and seniors majoring in Public Communication in the Community Development and Applied Economics department.
According to the course description, the course pairs groups of students with non-profit and municipal community partners to develop professional communication strategies and materials using their skills developed throughout their program.
Ellie Scott, Marketing Manager at Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity, is an alumnus of the Public Communication program at UVM. She remembers her experience in the course fondly, and she wanted to help support current students.
“This is such a great opportunity for us to communicate about our mission with a commercial and PSA series,” Scott said. “I’m glad that I got to work with these students and help them apply their skills to this new context.”
The group created two public service announcements and one commercial over their semester. The students learned about video production, project management, and the mission of Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity.
“I am looking forward to spreading the word about Green Mountain Habitat’s work, especially since affordable housing is such an important topic of conversation in Vermont at the moment,” said Scott.
The PSAs focus on Green Mountain Habitat’s volunteer programs and the impacts that these experiences have on individuals. They interviewed members of the Geezer team and the ‘Habitaters’ at our Manhattan Drive site in Burlington.
The commercial emphasizes the way in which the ReStores contribute to the organization’s overall mission.
