For Louise and her daughter, the journey to achieving homeownership has been long, but Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity has been the light at the end of the tunnel.
Originally from Cameroon, Louise arrived in the United States about seven years ago. After living in New York City for a couple of months, she found her way to Vermont by way of a friend’s recommendation.
For Louise, Vermont is a quiet and safe haven—a stark contrast to the bustling streets of New York. She immediately recognized the potential for a better life for herself and her daughter, who was a young teen.
However, finding affordable and stable housing has not been easy. Louise recalls the challenges she faced when searching for a home that fit her budget.
Through persistence, she found an affordable apartment through another local nonprofit, but the dream of homeownership always lingered.
For Louise, moving into her new Habitat home will be a dream come true. “It’s going to change everything,” she exclaims. “I’m going to feel proud, happy, and really part of this community and this country that I chose to call home.”
Achieving homeownership is more than just a personal milestone; it’s a symbol of success. Louise will be the first in her family to own a home, an accomplishment that fills her with pride and excitement.
The new home will not only provide stability and comfort but also a space where Louise can express her creativity. “I love decoration,” she says enthusiastically. “My home is my everything; it’s where my soul is. I can’t wait to decorate it and make it my dream place.”
Louise also sees her journey with Habitat as an opportunity to inspire others. “Habitat is changing my life,” she says. “I want to let people know about organizations like this that help others achieve their dreams. I’ll encourage them to learn more about Habitat and get involved.”
As Louise and her daughter begin their sweat equity hours, their hearts are filled with gratitude and hope. “We’re so happy. Every time we talk, we say, ‘Our home, our home.’ It’s a big dream come true,” she says with a smile.
“I’m just getting started, but I already have a really good impression,” she shares. Her first day at the site of her new home left her deeply moved by the kindness and dedication of the people she met.
“It was very emotional, seeing those people who are so nice. It inspired me a lot,” she says.
For this mother-daughter duo, their Habitat home is more than just a house; it’s the foundation for a brighter future.
