Aubrey (she/her) is our new ReStore Volunteer Coordinator! Aubrey comes to Green Mountain Habitat with lots of experience in nonprofit work and operations. We are excited that Aubrey has joined our team.
In her role, she is focused on ensuring that our volunteer program at our three ReStores runs smoothly. She also works with our Volunteer Manager to recruit new volunteers to keep our program growing!
We recently sat down with Aubrey to learn more about her journey to GMHFH.
Q: Tell us a little bit about your background.
A: I am originally from Cuba. I moved to the states when I was 8 years old, and I lived in Florida until I was 25. I have also lived in Fargo, North Dakota, Honolulu, Hawaii, and Denver, Colorado. I moved back to Florida for a year, and then I moved up here to Vermont. I’ve been here about seven months now.
For school, I did my first two years at a community college in Key West, Florida. I got my associate’s degree, and then I got my bachelor’s in communication from SNHU. My concentration was on new media, mostly marketing and social media.
I’ve used my degree in my career, which has mostly been in nonprofit administration.
Q: What excites you most about this new role?
A: I’m excited to be able to help the community. I know that affordable housing, especially accessible affordable housing, is very lacking in Vermont. It’s a really big niche that we need to fill, and thankfully we’re here! I am excited about giving back and fulfilling a crucial role that Vermont needs right now to create and build housing for all sorts of people.
Q: What have you enjoyed most about your first couple of weeks here?
A: Everyone is very nice and very accessible! Everyone is committed to the cause, and we do everything that we can to ensure that the ball keeps rolling so that we can build homes. Everyone is on board and always willing to lend a hand.
Q: Tell us a fun fact about yourself!
A: I speak five languages! My first two languages were Spanish and French.
My mom speaks French. She’s not French, but she graduated from the University of Havana with a master’s in French. She loves the French language and culture, so when I was growing up, she taught me French. It’s also very common to speak French in Cuba. Haiti is one of our Caribbean cousins, so the further you live on the island, the more you will interact with Haitians, who speak French.
English is my third language, then Hebrew and Portuguese. I’m Jewish, so I picked it up from going to synagogue. I learned Portuguese because one of my uncles married a Brazilian woman, and I wanted to be able to talk to her family in their native language.
