Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity is thrilled to announce our new Pride Build! This event brings individuals of all sexual orientations together to recognize the beautiful diversity of our community and create impactful change. We also hope to recognize the challenges that LGBTQIA+ individuals face toward homeownership.
Help support Pride Build!
Importance of Pride Build
We understand that the need for safe and affordable housing impacts everyone differently, and for some of our neighbors that means they have additional barriers to housing that we must work to address. Data shows LGBTQIA+ young people are 120% more likely to experience homelessness than non-LGBTQIA+ youth. According to research from The Trevor Project, 28% or nearly one in three LGBTQIA+ youth will experience homelessness or housing instability at some point in their lives. LGBTQIA+ adults have at least 15% higher odds of living in poverty than non-LGBTQIA+ adults, and the odds are increased for transgender and racial minority groups.
Creating Community
Pride Build is not about excluding heterosexual or cisgender individuals; rather, it aims to create an inclusive environment for the LGBTQIA+ community and allies to work together as volunteers.
Pride Build serves as a platform to advocate for our LGBTQIA+ neighbors. While the construction industry is traditionally dominated by straight males, Pride Build helps members of marginalized communities feel supported and included on the construction site. By actively engaging the LGBTQIA+ community, Pride Build challenges stereotypes and promotes inclusivity.
Pride Build Sponsors
Our Pride Build Week aims to raise awareness about the housing crisis and the issues that LGBTQIA+ individuals face when obtaining housing. Teams are responsible for raising funds to cover the cost of the day’s building materials, site supervision, meals, and swag.
