We love highlighting the people who are at the heart of our organization and help to make our mission possible: our volunteers. Our volunteers make it possible for us to build houses, keep our ReStores running, and foster community. It takes over 300 hours to built just one house, and we wouldn’t be able to accomplish that feat without the dedication of our volunteers. Meet our amazing volunteer Maria!
GMHfH: What is your volunteer role?
Maria: I am a Builder.
GMHfH: What does your role entail?
Maria: I have completed a variety of home building tasks, my favorite being constructing the roof trusses and using the pneumatic nail gun for the first time ever! Using tools for the first time is a fun and nervous experience; construction site supervisor Chris Lane is always there to offer clear instructions for how to safely operate any and all equipment.
GMHfH: Why you chose Habitat?
Maria: Moving to VT last summer, I knew I wanted to find a new hobby—building construction. In my current full-time position I am a project manager of construction projects. It came to me one day that Habitat for Humanity is the perfect place to learn new applicable skills. With a quick web search, I found that Green Mountain Habitat had a volunteer sign-up—there I was going to my first VT Habitat home to paint.
GMHfH: What do you do in your free time?
Maria: You will find me biking to my favorite destinations around: the pickleball courts at Szymanski Park, Red Rocks Park to run, and North Beach to swim. I am also in the process of designing a trellis for my mom’s grape garden—I even told her I might be able to actually build it now with my Habitat experience!
