Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity recently worked with a team of professionals from Leadership Champlain to create a diversity, equity, and inclusion initiative.
Leadership Champlain is a professional development program run by the Lake Champlain Chamber. This program brings local professionals and leaders together to explore Vermont’s political, economic, and cultural landscape through monthly seminars, leader interviews and a Service Project.
A group from Leadership Champlain worked with Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity to create a DEI initiative for the organization, which had previously not existed.
“This work is extremely important Green Mountain Habitat,” said David Mullin, CEO of Green Mountain Habitat for Humanity. “We are committed to ensuring that all employees, volunteers, families, and supporters feel included in our organization.”
Their work included a survey for staff, an analysis of current policies, and development materials for future DEI efforts.
“GMHfH was a great organization to work with. Everyone that we met and worked with genuinely cares and is passionate about what they do,” said Matt Sjoblom, Business Service Officer at New England Federal Credit Union. “I am honored to have been able to help the organization engrain DEI and Inclusivity as a continuing and strong focus in all facets of the organization as they make a positive impact in our local community.”
Green Mountain Habitat has begun to create more DEI training and programs for staff to improve support for employees of all backgrounds in the workplace.
A new DEI Committee has been created to continue Leadership Champlain’s efforts and further develop a roadmap for future efforts. This committee meets monthly, and it consists of staff from across the organization. Members bring feedback from other staff and will work together to foster an inclusive environment for all employees.
